The beginning of the year is the time that people traditionally make New Year’s resolutions in which they resolve to change some personal behavior. Conventional New Year’s resolutions to loose weight, stop smoking, or learn to play the piccolo are often abandoned after a few weeks and never reconsidered until the next calendar is hung on the wall.
Organizations’ New Year’s resolutions to reenergize their people, improve their communications, develop their leadership, or increase their sales are often neglected as quickly as a diet in a desert bar.
The beginning of the year is a great time to reflect on the prior year and make positive changes for the year ahead. But rather than simply gritting your teeth and resolving to do better at the same things you’ve failed to do in the past, this is a wonderful opportunity to take a fresh approach. January is a perfect time to consider creative, innovative ways to actually do things differently.
That’s why I founded International Creativity Month to be the first month of each new year. Rather than being satisfied with a temporary new year’s resolution, International Creativity Month provides you with a more powerful, long-lasting opportunity for positive change. 3. Creative Response to Goliath
The world loves the account of little David knocking out the giant Goliath with the bull’s-eye hit of a smooth stone flung from his slingshot. All the others, with conventional thinking, were intimidated into inaction by the overwhelming strength of the giant. But young David‘s inspired, creative response prevailed over size and power.
A high-tech version of David and Goliath is now being played out. The giant computer company, IBM, announced a new software product that does a lot of the things in another product sold by a much smaller company. But instead of selling their software, IBM announced they were going to give it away free of charge. It’s hard enough to compete with a giant but, when the giant says he’s going to give away something like what you are selling, it seems pretty hard to convince prospects to buy your stuff. Like David, the company responded creatively rather than conventionally.
They asked me to produce a catchy, humorous video to be posted on YouTube that would point out why it is worth buying their product even though IBM’s is free. The renown of the creative video may be the slingshot that will let the small company compete with the giant.
The company, New Generation Software, reports that they have gotten far more recognition and value out of this creative approach than they ever got from conventional advertising.

When you are confronted with a giant obstacle that you can’t overcome with conventional methods, don’t insist on stubbornly attempting to muscle your way through it with more intense work. Instead, look for a totally new, creative solution. You may become the next David to succeed against Goliath.
Following Randall's program, Success Through CREATIVITY and INNOVATION, at the California Counties IS Directors Association conference, a drawing was held for autographed copies of two creativity books by best selling author, Randall Munson. 5. Creativity Counting Goats
A group of students played a prank on their high school in Montana.
They let three goats loose in the school. That’s the kind of prank you’d expect from high school students. But these students used creativity to get more impact for their prank. Before they released the goats they painted numbers on them: 1, 2, 4.
The school administrators spent most of the day looking for number 3.
